Meet Ms. Nargiz!

I am so excited to join MSE as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher this school year! This is my third year as a high school ESL teacher. I have taught students of all language levels from various language and cultural backgrounds in grades 9-12.

I was born and raised in the Bay Area, California. I moved to Memphis after graduating from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. I come from many different languages and cultures myself. While I am first and foremost American, my ancestry is both Armenian and Puerto Rican. My native language is English, but I grew up communicating with my family in American Sign Language (ASL), learning Armenian in church and Spanish in school. I wish I knew then what I know now about language acquisition! Much of my Armenian has faded away, my Spanish can be stiff and awkward at times, and I only use ASL when I speak to my grandparents. The lessons I have learned in my own journey of language acquisition guide my teaching of others.

I know that learning and reaching mastery of a second language (or even third or fourth) can be difficult. However, I also know that a multiple language background comes with a rich culture that adds value and enrichment to all learning. As an ESL teacher I aim to celebrate my students and uplift their values in the classroom as we strive toward a greater understanding and ultimate mastery of the English language together.
